Burglars who can walk through walls rob Luthor mansion. When Lex realizes they may have evidence of his secret project, Clark is suspicious of his motives.

Smallville Season One What's up with the tattooed gang? While Chloe and Clark are at the Luthor mansion, three burglars enter the vault, stealing money, jewels, valuables, and a computer disk. Kryptonite pulses through their veins, and they're marked with glowing green tattoos. Turns out these guys are former high school jocks gone wrong. The gang has hit others in Smallville, including the S&L. The wild thieves realize the value of the stolen LuthorCorp. disk and demand $1 million blackmail from Lex.

What's up with Chloe? Chloe and Clark surprise the tattooed gang during the burglary. During a struggle, Chloe is thrown from an upper window. She lands in the hospital with a concussion and broken arm. When she awakens, Chloe remembers the gang's tattoos. Researching from her hospital bed, Chloe makes a connection between the kryptonite and how the gang can walk through walls.

What's up with Clark? Clark blames himself for not saving Chloe from the fall. At the suggestion of his parents, he turns his anger into a constructive search for some answers. Suspecting a Fordham's customer as one of the gang members, Clark realizes Whitney's involvement and warns him.

What's up with Whitney? Whitney is feeling desperate because he lost his college scholarship. He figures he's doomed to spend his life in Smallville. Two of the tattooed gang members visit Fordham's store, inviting Whitney for beers at their place. The gang is looking for some new blood to join them. As they try to recruit him, they tattoo him with kryptonite. Outside, the gang throws a terrified Whitney in front of a speeding semi. The truck passes right through him, proving his new ability. Later, the gang takes Whitney along to their meeting with Lex to collect blackmail money. Lex meets them with an empty briefcase. Whitney objects when they almost choke Lex to death, just as Clark arrives.

What's up with Lex? In attempt to protect himself and the sensitive information on the disk from getting out into the public, Lex hasn't reported anything missing to the police after the break-in. Clark is suspicious of this, but Lex swears there's nothing illegal about the sensitive info. Lex tells Clark about the attempted blackmail. Lex wants revenge on the gang and to protect the info on the disk, whether Whitney is involved or not.

What's up with Lana? Aunt Nell is packing up the theater. Lana learns that Lex is the buyer of the building. Lana tells Lex how sentimental the theater is to her. Lex says she provides no good business reason to change his plans of a parking garage in the space. Clark tells Lana about Whitney's lost scholarship. Now she understands his gloomy behavior. After the attempt on Lex's life, Whitney goes to Lana for help. She gets Clark, and Whitney recounts the story.

How it ends: Whitney and Clark go to the gang's place. Clark finds the disk, using his x-ray vision. The gang discovers them there, and Clark crushes the disk in his hand rather than give it up. One of the gang members puts his fist through Clark's chest. The two others threaten Whitney, taking him away. Lex arrives and subdues the remaining gang member. He calls police, while Clark rushes out to find Whitney. One gang member has Whitney with a gun to his head, holding him under a junked car, suspended from above. The other gang member intends to drop the car and crush him. Clark gets Whitney out of the way before the car drops, smashing the gang member. Police arrive and take the other two away.

Back at the theater, Lana presents Lex with a business plan Clark helped her with. The plan is to register the building as a historical landmark and social center. Her aunt could manage it, and Lana could work there. Lex agrees, convinced it would be an interesting partnership.

RECAP (TV Tome):
Chloe is badly hurt when three mysterious thieves rob Lex's manor. Lex hushes up the crime because they stole a computer disk with evidence that he is tapped into his father's computer network. It turns out that the robbers are three former jocks who have figured out a way to make tattoos out of a meteor rock distillation that hyper-accelerates their metabolism, letting them walk through walls. The kryptonite tattoos also affect Clark, weakening him. The tattoos' effects are temporary and the subject gradually becomes immune to the effects, so they need new blood and sign up Whitney. The gang tries to blackmail Lex, but Clark intervenes. Whitney finally realizes the hyper-speed gang life isn't for him and turns to Clark and Lana for help. Clark finds Lex's disk, but the gang try to kill Whitney. The leader's tattoo wears off, and he is crushed beneath a car as Clark super-speeds to Whitney's rescue. The two remaining gang members are hauled off to jail, with Lex threatening them to ensure their silence.
QUOTES:
Chloe: Clark Kent, investigative reporter - has a nice ring to it.

Lex: Clark, you can't save the world. All you'll end up with is a Messiah complex and a lot of enemies.
Clark: I saved you, didn't I? That turned out all right.

Lex: A man is judged by the quality of his friends. If the quarterback's with them, he'll have to face the consequences.

Lex: You're a teenager, Lana. Mercurial doesn't do you justice.

Clark: The question is, how'd they get inside?
Pete: I don't know. Now stop channeling Chloe and come on.

Martha: Hi, Clark. What are you doing?
Clark: (smashes some logs) Trying to make myself useful.
Jonathan: Hey ,son, we need firewood, not toothpicks.

Chloe: Ah, the sweet smell of freedom.
Clark: Chloe, you were in the hospital, not Alcatraz.

Clark: Chloe, you can't just go snooping around someone's house.
Chloe: It's a mansion. It's designed for snooping.

Lex: Just remember boys - you keep my secret, and I'll keep yours. [pause] And If you don't, you'll find out you're not the only ones who can reach through walls.

Lex: (to Chloe) I look forward to resuming our verbal judo.

Chloe: You know, all this resting is driving me insane. These so-called "health-care professionals" just want me to stay in bed and eat jello.
Clark: Those fascists.

Chloe: Well, I am perturbed with you, Clark. I'm also mad that you didn't put out the Chicago fire of 1871, or prevent the fall of the Roman Empire, making you directly responsible for the Dark Ages.

Clark: How're you feeling?
Chloe: Like a million bucks...that was thrown in the washing machine and set on "spin".

Lex: You have no idea who you're dealing with.

Pete: Oh no, not the Kent 1,000-yard stare.

FREAK OF THE WEEK:
We meet three former jocks from Smallville High six years ago. At the time, they lost their scholarships and hopes for the future, and started injecting themselves with Kryptonite in the form of green tattoos. This speeds up their metabolism and allows them to walk through matter, for example walking through walls. They attempted to rob the Smallville Savings and Loans, but didn't succeed. In fact, one of them lost his arm that was left in the safe.

They then rob the Luthor vault in the mansion, including a disk that shows that Lex has gained access to LuthorCorp's Intranet. In the process, they seriously injure Chloe Sullivan who was at the mansion interviewing Lex Luthor. Clark Kent is curious as to why Lex did not report the robbery. A few days later, the jocks return to the mansion, and using the disk as collateral, they blackmail Lex for $1 million. Lex promises them he will be in touch with the money.

Unfortunately, the jocks also realize that they are not as strong as they used to be, and that they need to add a new member to their gang. They recruit Whitney Fordman, who has just lost his scholarship and is destined to work in his father's store for the rest of his life. They invite him to a party, and then encourage him to get his first meteorite tattoo. Once he agrees, they take him out to show him his new power. They throw him onto the road in front of a moving truck, and the truck drives right through him.

Wearing face masks, they then take Whitney along to meet up with Lex, who claims to be bringing $1 million, but is in fact carrying an empty case. The jocks get upset with him and start beating Lex up. Whitney complains that this is not what he signed on for. Clark, who had begun to figure things out, interrupts and the jocks quickly leave the scene through the walls. Clark calls to Whitney who turns around and is recognized despite his mask.

He finally admits everything to Lana Lang and Clark. He explains about Lex's disk. Both Clark and Whitney decide to go to the jock's hideout, while they are sleeping and recovering their strengths. In a final showdown, they find the disk at the same time as Lex arrives on the scene. The jocks show up, and, disappointed in Whitney, try to kill him, but Clark saves him. The cops finally show up, and while Lex explains the situation, he cleverly leaves out the fact that the boys could walk through walls. He then turns to the jocks as they are driven away and tells them that he will keep their secret as long as they keep his (his access to LuthorCorp's Intranet).
